Frequently asked questions

What does it measure and who would benefit from taking it?

It measures your punctuation, grammar, vocabulary, and formal administrative English, with a focus on British legal terms. It may help learners and curious readers check their accuracy in official UK contexts, or people preparing for English exams that require formal language.

Which of the six formats should I choose, and why?

There are three levels (Easy, Intermediate, Expert), each with a Short version of 10 questions in 3 minutes and a Full version of 30 questions in 8, 9 or 10 minutes depending on level. Choose Short for a quick overview and Full for a more precise score.

What should I revise or practise specifically for this test?

Revise British legal terminology and advanced grammar such as punctuating plural possessives, semicolons, ellipsis, and verb patterns. Practise reading each sentence to identify grammatical functions, and use the Bookmark for review to mark uncertain items before moving on.

How do I get a score band and certificate, and what are the thresholds?

You receive one point per correct answer. Bands are Needs work below 40%, Intermediate from 40%, Advanced from 60%, and Expert from 80% only at Expert level; other levels top out at Advanced. Passing requires 6 of 10 or 18 of 30. A passed test earns a PDF certificate with a QR code verification page.

What happens if I retake it, and how do the rankings treat multiple attempts?

You can retake with Start again as often as you like; the questions are the same and in the same order, so a retake mostly measures memory. Rankings show only your best attempt: highest score, then shortest time, with first name and last name initial, country, city, score and time.

Who can see my result, and can I delete my data?

A result is visible only to you, but once unlocked it appears in public rankings with your first name and last name initial, country, city, score and time. You can request deletion from the data rights page; it is not an instant button.
