Frequently asked questions
What does this test measure and who is it useful for?
It measures how precisely you identify regional river systems, river mouths, upland ridges and national high points within the UK. It suits curious readers, students and anyone preparing for a subject exam who wants to check their own knowledge.
How do the lengths and levels work, and which should I choose?
Short has 10 questions, about 3 minutes; Full has 30 questions. Each level is a separate series, harder as the level rises. Full time is about 8, 9 or 10 minutes according to level. Short gives an overview, Full a more precise score.
How should I prepare for river and mountain recognition?
Practise locating rivers on blank maps and tracing where they meet estuaries or mouths. Revise regional high summits and ridge patterns by county, then do timed map exercises. The optional Hint gives a method tip and never lowers your score.
How are my result bands worked out?
One point is given per correct answer. Bands depend on the share: below 40% is Needs work, from 40% Intermediate, from 60% Advanced, and from 80% Expert only at Expert level. Other levels stop at Advanced.
What do I need to pass and receive the PDF certificate?
You need at least 6 correct answers out of 10 in any Short version, or 18 out of 30 in any Full version. The PDF certificate contains your first and last name, score, date, certificate number and a QR code that opens a verification page.
Can I retake this test and will my result be public?
Yes, use Start again, but the questions are the same in the same order, so a retake mostly measures memory. Your result is visible only to you. Rankings show your best attempt with first name, initial, city, country, score and time.
