Frequently asked questions
What does this test measure, and who benefits from taking it?
It measures your understanding of Roman provincial administration, military units, Romano-British culture and early Anglo-Saxon governance, archaeology and social structures. It is useful for learners, curious readers and people preparing an exam in this subject.
Which level and version should I choose first?
For a quick first check, choose Easy Short. For a more precise score, choose Easy Full. Intermediate and Expert are separate question sets with the same format options, so match the level to your current confidence.
How do the short and full versions differ?
Short versions give 10 questions and about 3 minutes. Full versions give 30 questions and about 8 to 10 minutes according to level. Each format has one overall time limit shown as a countdown.
What should I revise before taking this test?
Revise Roman fiscal and military officials, villa features, Romano-British deities, functions of the witan and hide, ship-burial evidence and preserved written tablets. Practise reading questions literally and separating Roman roles from Anglo-Saxon ones.
How do I read the result bands and pass thresholds?
Each correct answer earns one point. Bands use the share of correct answers: Needs work below 40%, Intermediate from 40%, Advanced from 60%, and Expert from 80% only at Expert level. To pass you need 6 correct out of 10 or 18 out of 30.
What does the certificate include, and is it official?
It includes your first and last name, score, date, a certificate number and a QR code that opens a verification page. It is not an official exam, diploma or state certification.
What happens when I retake, and how do rankings use my result?
You can retake with Start again; questions are the same and in the same order, so a retake mostly measures memory. Rankings show only your first name and initial, country, city, score and time from your best attempt, with location estimated from IP.
